Gide was again very pleased to sponsor Oxford University’s 10th French Law Moot (“Concours de plaidoiries en droit français”), held on Monday 12 March 2018.
The Institute of Oxford University European and Comparative Law organises the French Law Moot, which is held each year, in March, in the Law Faculty. The Moot brings together law students from outside of France who argue, in French, over a problem of French law. This event was launched in 2008 and was initially purely for Oxford University students. It has now grown exponentially, bringing together teams of “Mooters” from some of Europe’s leading universities to debate, in French, a question of French law.
Gide has been sponsoring the event since its launch, alongside the Association Henri Capitant des amis de la culture juridique française and the Société de Législation Comparée. Each year, the final of the event is judged by a panel consisting of a partner of Gide, a law professor from France and a judge from the Court of Cassation, France’s supreme court in civil and criminal matters. Gide judges for 2018 were partner Rupert Reece and senior counsel Philippe Dupichot.
The 2018 Edition of the Moot was held on 12 March. Twelve teams representing the Universities of Birmingham, Cologne, Cologne/Madrid, Essex, Florence, Galatasaray, King's College London, Oxford (2 teams), Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and University College London debated the problem set by M. Jean-Guy Huglo and M. Philippe Flores of the Cour de Cassation. The final of the Moot was won by Gabriel Bulteel and Serge Ilioukhine representing King's College London, while runners-up were Suraj Saggar and Hosanna Makanda representing the University of Birmingham.
The Oxford moot has now become a major event for students who study French law throughout the world; it also is a great example of the common achievements that Association Henri Capitant and Gide can carry together in the course of this special relationship
