News | French-English Law Essay Prize with Gray's Inn 2023
Gide is delighted to announce that, following the success of the inaugural prize last year, it will be collaborating with The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn ("Gray's Inn) once again on the French-English Law Essay Prize 2023.
As per last year's prize, the topic will focus on a comparison of law relevant to commercial transactions in the French and English legal systems.
The judging panel will be chaired by Appeal Court judge and Vice Treasurer of Gray's Inn, The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Coulson. Lord Justice Coulson will be joined by Estelle Cros, French Liaison Judge at the Embassy of France in the UK; Duncan Fairgrieve, Professor of Comparative law at Paris-Dauphine University; Gide partners Saadia Bhatty and Margaret Boswell; and Michael Butcher, co-founder and Past President of the Franco-British Lawyers Society.
The Essay topic title will be revealed before the end of the academic year in June, with submissions required by mid-September 2023. The winner and runner-up will be announced in late October 2023. The winner of the competition will receive a prize of £1,500 plus a two-week paid internship with Gide's London office; the runner-up will receive a prize of £1,000.
Margaret Boswell, Gide partner and head of Gide London's Graduate Training Programme, said: "I am delighted to be joining the judging panel again; the standard of the submissions from last year's candidates was extraordinarily high and I am looking forward to seeing what this year's cohort can achieve."
Saadia Bhatty, partner in Gide's International Dispute Resolution practice added: "I am honoured to be participating in this important essay prize and to be part of the judging panel with my esteemed fellow panellists. I look forward to seeing the approaches of the applicants as they explore the differences and similarities that exist between the legal solutions found in French and English law."

The prize will be open to individuals in full time legal education for less than six years at the time of submission of the essay.
