On Saturday 9 March, Gide Beijing provided legal aid to young migrant workers as part of Plan International China’s project on Youth Employment Solutions for Migrant Youth in Beijing, a project that Gide Pro Bono has been supporting financially since 2016. Its objective is to help disadvantaged migrant youth, particularly women, to achieve their full social and economic potential by identifying and facilitating access to opportunities for decent work in China. Of the expected 900 beneficiaries of the programme (at least 80% of which are women), over 600 have already finished the training and have found stable employment, with a wage doubled in comparison with pre-training levels.
As part of this programme, partner Guo Min and associate Gu Xin worked closely with Plan International China to fully review the legal training presentation that aims to raise legal awareness among disadvantaged migrant women. At the legal aid lecture, Gu delivered a presentation on effective and practical legal approaches for migrant women to better protect both their property and their employment rights and interests. The audience of about 30 women under the age of 40 were all originally from rural parts of China who had moved to Beijing for employment purposes.
The Gide Pro Bono programme includes an endowment fund to support specific projects that provide (i) access to law and justice; (ii) access to education; and/or (iii) solidarity with those most in need. It also enables all members of the firm to freely offer their professional skills for up to 40 hours per year to charities and NGOs identified by the Gide Pro Bono Commission. In Beijing, Gide thus partnered with Plan International China to offer its support in preparing and delivering training workshops on employment law to young migrant women.
