Collaboration | Gray's Inn
Gide is very pleased to be collaborating with The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn ("Gray's Inn") on a French-English Law Essay Prize.
The judging panel for the prize will be chaired by Lady Justice Nicola Davies who will be joined by: Michael Butcher co-founder and Past President of the Franco-British Lawyers Society; Philippe Dupichot, Professor of law at the Sorbonne and Head of Gide's Scientific Council; Bénédicte Fauvarque-Cosson, a judge at the Conseil d'Etat in Paris; Nadège Nguyen, partner in Gide's Mergers & Acquisitions/Corporate practice group; and Simon Whittaker, Professor of European Comparative Law and a Fellow of St John's College, Oxford.
Having introduced the prize back in September 2021, we are now excited to be at the next important stage of the prize process - the announcement of the essay title.
So, without further delay, we can reveal that the title of the French-English Law Essay Prize 2022 is as follows:
"Is English law or French law better adapted to dealing with the effects of extraordinary supervening circumstances on performance of the contract? Candidates are invited either to consider this question generally, or instead to focus on particular aspects or issues to which it gives rise."
Submissions are required by 31 August 2022, with the winner and runner-up to be announced in late September 2022. The winner of the competition will receive a prize of £1,500 plus a two-week paid internship with Gide's London office; the runner-up will receive a prize of £1,000.
On the prize, Philippe Dupichot said: "Two different systems but united by their mutual status as two of the world's richest legal cultures, a comparison of French and English law never ceases to be fascinating. Gide is very excited to explore and celebrate this with this French-English Law Essay Prize."
Nadège Nguyen commented: "I am honoured to join this prestigious judging panel and I look forward to reviewing the essays comparing two major legal systems that are crucial in the daily life of practitioners increasingly involved in complex international transactions."
The prize is open to individuals in full-time legal education for less than six years at the time of submission of the essay.
