International Trade

Characterised by transnational tensions and concerns about economic security, international trade is one of the key issues of the decade. From fighting unfair trade to addressing market access and managing supply chain risks and opportunities, issues of economic security and sustainability are fundamental.

Today, the fragmentation of major economies has clearly had a significantly disruptive effect on the instruments of international trade. Multilateralism is at a turning point and Europe has developed a new “toolbox”. Our clients are looking for expert advice and legal support to help them to comply with these new directives.

Since the opening of our office in Brussels in 1967, we have been a leading provider of legal advice on European and international economic law. We closely monitor European legal and economic developments to offer our clients the most relevant solutions.

We work closely with our Regulation and Competition teams in Brussels, our M&A, Compliance and Litigation departments in Paris, our international offices and our partners.

To further strengthen our expert team, we have appointed two former senior European Commission officials: Michael Servoz, a former Director General and Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission, and Wolfgang Mueller, a former Head of the Policy Unit conducting anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations. Gilles Briatta, former General Secretary of the French Government for European Affairs, also shares his unique expertise with our team.

Areas of intervention

  • Whether developed bilaterally or not, market access rules are increasingly intended to counter discriminatory and restrictive practices. We use various tools, including the Trade Barriers Regulation and the International Procurement Instrument, to help our clients with issues related to the development of export markets.

  • Trade defence instruments remove the advantages enjoyed by exporters engaging in dumping or receiving foreign subsidies. We have represented EU industries in anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and safeguard complaints to the European Commission for many years. With expert knowledge of the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR), our team also excels in the areas of services, investments, trade in goods and public procurement.

  • We continue to develop our expertise in international and European sanctions, assisting our clients with compliance and specific and operational issues. Our Commercial team also excels in export control, whether for dual-use or military goods, and maintains strong working relationships with the competent national administrations.

  • We work with producers to advocate for and apply new autonomous trade instruments to eliminate forced labour from supply chains and support the existing efforts of EU industry. We also help them to comply with regulations on due diligence, carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAM) and deforestation.

  • We help our clients to ensure the effectiveness of applied trade measures. This may involve adapting customs rules of origin, lodging an appeal against fraud, circumventing trade measures and legal proceedings before the Court of Justice. Our team is well-versed in these procedures and works closely with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
