31 January 2012: Rémy Fekete, counsel to the Republic of Guinea government for access to ACE submarine cable
On 27 January 2012, Guinea officially welcomed the ship laying the high-speed telecommunications Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable.
The ACE is part of a 17,000 kilometre (10,540-mile) fibre optic line stretching from France to South Africa. A 17-member consortium headed by France Telecom is responsible for the ACE, which will connect 21 countries, and is due to be operational in the second half of 2012.
All Guinean telecom operators worked together on this project, which will give them access to international high-speed capacities in conditions complying with the Open Access principle.
This US$ 700 million system uses the most advanced high-speed broadband fibre optic technology and will be a vector of social development and economic growth in Africa, reducing the digital divide.
Rémy Fekete, Gide Loyrette Nouel partner, advised the Guinean government on establishing the Public Private Partnership that would finance, deploy and operate Guinea's access to the ACE cable.
As highlighted by minister Oyé Guilavogui in charge of telecommunications, "this is a historic moment for Guinea, marking the end of its isolation. We will now be able to promote an information society in a country that is at long last connected to the highway of international communication".
