Gide Loyrette Nouel (GLN) has advised King Power Power Group (King Power), a Hong Kong retail conglomerate, on the acquisition of Château Bernadotte from Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, part of the renowned Champagne Louis Roederer group.
King Power, which originated in Hong Kong, is a diversified global group with activities across sectors including food & beverage, property investment & leasing, manufacturing, sports, leisure & health services, brand ownership & and retail services. It operates more than 500 retail outlets across the world, including a leading chain of duty free stores.
Château Bernadotte, whose first wine holds the "Cru Bourgeois" recognition and consistently high wine award ratings, operates a large vineyard within the Haut-Medoc AOC appellation in Saint-Sauveur, in the Bordeaux region of France. It has a yearly production of around 200,000 bottles. Château Bernadotte, with Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer in 2007.
The GLN team advising King Power was led by partner Guillaume Rougier-Brierre, with assistance from Erwan Ogier. The GLN team drew from its deep experience advising on major transactions involving the viniculture sectors in France and China, including assisting the giant Chinese agri-business group, COFCO, with its acquisition in 2011 of Château de Viaud, an AOC vineyard in the Bordeaux region, and advising Domaines Baron de Rothschild on a partnership with Chinese bank, CITIC, in the Shandong region, for the launch of a local fine wine.
Ernst & Young Bordeaux advised King Power Group on financial and tax matters. Champagne Louis Roederer was advised by Wine Bankers & Co on M&A aspects and Fidal Bordeaux on legal aspects.
